About LinkedIn
LinkedIn is a social networking site designed specifically for the business community. The goal of the site is to allow registered members to establish and document networks of people they know and trust professionally.
A LinkedIn member’s profile page, which emphasizes employment history and education, has professional network news feeds and a limited number of customizable modules. Basic membership for LinkedIn is free. Network members are called “connections.” Unlike other free social networking sites like Facebook or Twitter, LinkedIn requires connections to have a pre-existing relationship.
With basic membership, a member can only establish connections with someone he has worked with, knows professionally (online or offline) or has gone to school with. Connections up to three degrees away (see six degrees of separation) are seen as part of the member's network, but the member is not allowed to contact them through LinkedIn without an introduction. Premium subscriptions can be purchased to provide members with better access to contacts in the LinkedIn database.
LinkedIn was co-founded by Reid Hoffman, a former Executive Vice President in charge of business and corporate development for PayPal. The site, which was launched in May 2003, currently has over 40 million members from 200 countries, representing 170 industries. According to Reid Hoffman, 27% of LinkedIn subscribers are recruiters.
Pros:
- More mature audience
- Business and professional connections
- Promotes connecting with people you truly know
Cons:
- Limited personable interaction
- Allows you to endorse and/or connect with individuals you may not know
- Untapped neighborhood for less savvy computer operators
About Twitter
Twitter is a website, owned and operated by
Twitter Inc., which offers a social networking and microblogging
service, enabling its users to send and read messages called tweets.
Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the user's
profile page. Tweets are publicly visible by default, however senders can
restrict message delivery to their friends list. Users may subscribe to other
users' tweets—this is known as following and
subscribers are known as followers.
All
users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, compatible external
applications (such as for smartphones), or by Short Message Service (SMS)
available in certain countries. While the service is free, accessing it through
SMS may incur phone service provider fees. The website is based in San
Francisco, California. Twitter also has servers and offices in San Antonio,
Texas and Boston, Massachusetts.
Since
its creation in March 2006 and its launch in July 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Twitter
has gained popularity worldwide and currently has more than 175 million users.
It is estimated that Twitter has 190 million users, generating 65 million
tweets a day and handling over 800,000 search queries per day. It is sometimes
described as the "SMS of the Internet."

- I agree with
a comprehensive information site that states: Unlike other social networking websites, it may be difficult to find people with the same kind of interests as you have. But Facebook is indeed, one of the best networks to get in touch with long-lost friends. The original intention of Facebook was to connect college students with each other, and let them stay in touch. However, the website became so popular that today, anyone from any part of the world can join it. You can use this website to chat with your friends, date people, share pictures, spread any topic of interest, and meet new people. Now that you have got a brief idea, let's take a look at how to get started. Additionally it gives great insight to the Pros and Cons of Facebook.
